Sometimes, getting back to basics can be a breath of fresh air. With so many resource packs trying to make Minecraft look like a big budget triple-A game, finding something less intrusive the add a fresh coat of paint over the game can be a real challenge. There are still a good bunch of resource packs that do not bump up texture resolutions to ridiculous extents to cripple your game performance. Cuboids resource pack is one such example. It is a simple resource pack that works in 16x texture resolution but managed to change the visuals in Minecraft to make them more cartoonish, more colorful, and more joyful without negating what made the original such a great game. The Cuboids texture pack first emerged in late 2021 as a resource pack for the Java Edition of Minecraft. Compared to resource packs that were released years ago, Cuboids is considered a new resource pack. Despite being so new, it managed to get several tens of thousands of downloads. Having experienced a fair degree of success since launch, the resource pack continued to receive updates from the original developer. Known as Cryokine, the developer remains an active member of the Minecraft community across several sites and on his patron page where he shares live streams of his texture creation sessions and early updates. As stated previously, Cuboid uses only 16x texture resolution. The Cuboid resource pack focuses mostly on brightening up the textures in the game. Some of the textures were also replaced with new ones. Many of the ores in the game received new textures. There are also new textures for dirt, sand, grass, leaves, trees, wood, crates, pebbles, and more. Some of the more notable changes are done to the new Wet Farmland and Fern. There is also a new Spruce Log, Spruce Door, Birch Door, Jungle Door, and more. The textures in the game that were not swapped with new ones received some touchup work in the sense that the colors were altered to be more vibrant and in tune with the overall theme of the resource pack.

Besides the textures of ingame items, blocks, and terrain, the developer also worked on player armor and weapons. As expected, they are now more colorful. These new textures are also reflected in the UI. The icons for the weapons and armors were updated accordingly. Icons for materials, food, and ores have also been updated to be more colorful and vibrant. Lastly, some work was done on the player UI. The font in vanilla Minecraft was updated to be easier to read. The player HUD was also changed. The item menu at the bottom of the screen is now a light gray, making it easier to spot objects. Also, the health and experience bar had its colors tweaked to be more vibrant and stand out. Being a 16x resource pack, Cuboid does not affect game performance when installed alone. It does not add special textures and it does not toy around with water and sky textures thus it should maintain the same FPS as vanilla. However, the resource pack does become considerably more enjoyable with a shader pack installed. No particular shader pack is recommended with Cuboid thus you can try different ones. However, you can expect some mild game performance degradation and FPS loss, depending on how powerful your PC is. Alone, with no shader pack, the Cuboid resource pack can be PvP friendly. The great game performance and contrasting textures make it easy to spot other players. Installation of the Cuboid resource pack is straightforward. Because it does not use any kind of special features that are usually enabled using MCPatcher or Optifine, Cuboid can be installed manually. Keep in mind that the Cuboid resource pack is still being advertised as a work in progress and not all the textures in the game were updated. It is possible for some textures to be missing but feel free to follow the original developer and check for updates that may include fixes and new updates.
